  • De Beaurepaire Wines (opens in a new tab)

    Winery · Rylstone

Possibly our favourite stop in the region (technically Rylstone): French-style wines and a one-on-one tasting with owner Richard in the old stone horse stable, learning how limestone shapes the wines.

  • First Ridge Wines (opens in a new tab)

    Winery · Mudgee

Italian varieties aplenty! Unreal views from a cellar door built from shipping containers, and the fire was roaring on a cold day.

  • Gilbert Family Wines (opens in a new tab)

    Winery · Mudgee

We did the premium tasting and loved the rieslings and a couple of shirazes. It's a beautiful stone building with a massive open fireplace.

  • Heslop Wines (opens in a new tab)

    Winery · Eurunderee

A great al fresco tasting in the garden of their quaint cottage cellar door. Don't miss the 'Bush Botanicals', an Aussie-inspired vermouth.

  • Logan Wines (opens in a new tab)

    Winery · Apple Tree Flat

A must for a lot of people: Mudgee and Orange wines and an epic big deck looking back to the range, perfect on a nice afternoon.

  • Lowe Family Wine Co (opens in a new tab)

    Winery · Mudgee

Lots of space inside and out. I'd been before and enjoyed it all over again.

  • Petersons Wines (opens in a new tab)

    Winery · Mudgee

Seriously delicious NSW wines with great Mudgee fruit. They have cellar doors in a few regions, but it doesn't feel big or commercial. We were very well looked after.

  • Robert Stein Winery (opens in a new tab)

    Winery · Mudgee

A family winery and farm with tastings daily, a food truck using farm produce and even a motorbike museum. Pipeclay Pumphouse restaurant is on the same property.

  • Short Sheep Micro-Winery (opens in a new tab)

    Winery · Mudgee

Jax and I loved this on our first Mudgee trip: small-batch, low-intervention wines from a 'micro-winery', only available at the cellar door.

Stay

  • River Ranch Mudgee (opens in a new tab)

    Farm Stay · Mudgee

Where we stayed on our last Mudgee trip: a great base out of town on a beautiful property in the hills, right next to a bubbling river. Heaps of space, a great kitchen and outdoor areas, plus alpacas, horses and lots of kangaroos.

Tips

Getting there and around

Mudgee is about a 3.5 to 4 hour drive from Sydney, and a bit longer from Canberra. You want a car.

River Ranch, where we stayed, is about 15 minutes from town on the Sydney side, near Logan Wine, up a few kilometres of dirt road. The host sends the exact address before check-in. Save it. Phone reception drops out on the way in.
