Tips
Getting there and around
Fly into John F. Kennedy or Newark. Both are a train or a taxi into Manhattan.
The subway. You don't need a MetroCard anymore. Tap on with your phone or card at the gate. Single rides are cheap, around US$3 when I last wrote this down. Check the current fare before you go, because it moves. If you are on it all week, look at a weekly pass.
It will get you to pretty much every pin on my New York list with a short walk. Don't be intimidated. Jump on. You won't get lost, and you might find somewhere good.
Money and tipping
Tipping is a big thing. It is how a lot of service staff get paid, and some work only for tips. Be as generous as you can, and let the tip reflect the service.
One beer at the bar, tip US$1. That figure moves, so read the room.
If you are sitting down and the service was good, double the first two numbers of the bill. A bill of US$236.75 is a US$46 tip. That is the expectation. Add more if it was amazing. If it wasn't, say something during the meal so they can fix it, rather than staying quiet and punishing them at the end.
Tip in cabs and the bellhop. On a long hotel stay, leave something for housekeeping, especially if you are messy or the room is being cleaned a lot.
Shelf prices and menu prices do not include tax. It gets added when you pay.
Etiquette
Keep right on the footpath.
Look right, then left, when you cross the road.
Safety
When I first wrote this I said I had never felt unsafe in New York. I don't feel that way now. I'm not sure if that is age or the city. Be aware, be alert, and make smart choices.
Keep your wallet in a front pocket and your phone in your hand. Don't carry a lot of cash, and don't flash it.
Watch out for scammers, especially around Canal St. They're the worst. Don't take anything that's handed to you, and if you want the real thing, save up and buy it.
